Singing and playing the Ukulele – why is it so hard?!

Hello fellow bloggers/musicians!

As I am approaching the end of learning Riptide on the Ukulele, I am getting nervous yet very excited!

I am starting to be able to strum Riptide on the Ukulele almost flawlessly. Although I still struggle with switching from the Am chord to the G chord, I am getting better each and every time I practice. Ā The thing I am currently working on is playing the Ukulele AND singing the lyrics to Riptide at the same time – which is something I thought would come carelessly – but it is so hard! Every time I start singing, my fingers instantly stop working and I stop strumming. I find it nearly impossible to do the two at the same time. I even tried simply humming the song and even that was too much. I asked my good friend Kate who is very good at the Ukulele if this is normal. She said that it 100% is normal and is all apart of the journey. She said that I just have to keep on practicing and eventually, I will be able to sing and play at the same time. Ā If I keep practicing both switching from the Am chord to the G chord and practice singing the lyrics, I will have done every necessary step to learn Riptide on the Ukulele. I am so excited to see what the final product sounds like!

I find this frustrating but it is all apart of the journey! I am a very impatient person but this is challenging me to improve this aspect of my personality.

Tune in in two weeks to see me playing Riptide and singing it on the Ukulele!

Internet Safety+ Edited iMovie video!

Hello Fellow Bloggers!

Today during my Tech class, we had a guess speaker come in and talk about online safety and whether or not children should be allowed screen time. To say the least, I have learned A LOT today about the internet I use everyday.

Jesse Miller brought up some very interesting points about the internet I never knew and about apps I use everyday that frightened me. For example, the fact that every Snapchat I take – whether I send it to people or not – gets saved by Snapchat and they have all of those pictures stored somewhere. I decided to ask Jesse why Snapchat does this and what do they do with the billions of pictures they have stored.Ā  He answered by saying that this data is essentially a way to keep their investors and prove to them that hey, people are using this app and you are investing into an app that people use everyday. It is also important if one day, the owners of Snapchat want to sell their software to another company, they have all this data to give to the knew owners. When Jesse told me this, it made a lot more sense. I did not understand what the point of keeping all those pictures with me and a stupid filter would benefit for their App.

I really enjoyed having Jesse come into our class today. I learned a lot of information I will carry with me forever!

As well, I edited an iMovie today for the first time in a long time! Although it does not seem like much, I cut time out, split a clip, added a transition, added titles, and lowered the volume of the second clip! Call me an iMovie queen!

See you in two weeks!

Netflix with Spanish Subtitles

Hola mi amigo!

Como estas?

I am still keeping up to date with my Duolingo streak – I am now at 17 days! I do really enjoy Duolingo however, I need to take on some more challenges in order to improve and practice my Spanish. I have been practicing a lot with my friend Kaylyn and that has been helping a lot. Holding a conversation (even though at times it is very difficult) is the best kind of practice and is something Duolingo could never offer. Kaylyn is very good at speaking Spanish; she took it all throughout high school and is practically fluent. When we talk to one another in Spanish, she is definately the one carrying the conversation and helping me out. It is good practice for the both of us, as when she is helping me that is good practice for her as she has to explain it to me. I want to keep on speaking to Kaylyn in Spanish every once in a while, as it is the best practice I can get.

The next step in my learning journey is an interesting one. I want to start putting Spanish subtitles every time I watch something on Netflix. If I have the audio on in English and I am reading it in Spanish, hopefully I will be able to make the connection between the two. This might be challenging, but it is a simple and hopefully effective way to add Spanish into my every day life!

Tune in in 2 weeks (after reading break) to see how my Spanish Netflix journey goes!

Switching from chord to chord on the Ukulele-is it hard?

Hello fellow bloggers!

Overall, my ukulele practice has been going very well. I am enjoying every step of this journey. I have always wanted to learn the ukulele so I am very thankful for this experience.Ā

After successfully learning the three chords, my next step was to be able to go from Am, the G, to C chordĀ  trying to pause as for the least amount of between them. After a lot of work, I can succesfully switch from G to C, and C to Am. I am really struggling to go from Am to G. Going from 1 finger with the Am chord to quickly switching to the G chord which uses 3 fingers is very challenging. I notice that when I am able to do the switch quickly, it is when I have proper posture, my thumb is behind, and I am holding the ukulele properly. I just really need to focus on these things and one day, switching from Am to G chord will come naturally and effortlessly. Once I can master this, I will be ready to move forward with my learning journey and learn the strumming pattern, which is DDU UDU, to the song Riptide. I can not wait to learn this song!Ā

Tune in next time to see if I finally can switch from the chord Am to the chord G effortlessly!Ā

Blog 2- Narrowing Down Our Options

Hello fellow bloggers!

After deep thought and consideration, we have finally decided on what we want to focus our attention on for the Edtech inquiry project. We still want our main focus to be on the primary grades, however, rather than doing several kinds of technology in the primary grades, we will be exploring how to successfully integrate FreshGrade in the classroom and the benefitsĀ  for teachers, students, and parents.Ā

We chose to do our project on FreshGrade because it is an outlet we are very unfamiliar with but feel as though it can be an excellent tool to include into our future classroom. Based off of the slim information we know, it offers a blogging platform for students and teachers; grading and feedback page that parents have access to; and communication between families, students, and teachers. Although we do not know too much about this platoform, we are excited to learn more about what FreshGrade has to offer and how it can be utilized in the primary grades.

Here is a video that breifly summarizes what FreshGrade offers!

Kahoot! Is it truly a hoot?

Can I hold a conversation in Spanish?

Hola fellow bloggers!

Can you believe it! My streak on Duolingo is now up to 12 days! I am so proud of myself for being consistent with my learning journey because learning a new language only happens with constant and effortful work.

I really enjoy that Duolingo sends me a notification everyday when it is time for me to practice. It keeps me motivated and I do not have any excuses not to practice for a 5 minute lesson, as I am reminded to do so everyday. Sometimes however, I receive the notification and kind of internally whine, as at the time I may not want to do it.

I want to take my learning journey to the next step. Although Duolingo is beneficial and practical, I feel as though I can get more practice else where. I need to start watching videos/movies in Spanish, or better yet, holding an actual conversation in Spanish. I can only get better if I do this, even though it may be really challenging. My good friend Kaylyn, who is also in this class, took Spanish all throughout highschool. She is really good at speaking Spanish and understanding it, and would love to practice with her.

Tune in next week to see if I can hold a conversation with Kaylyn and keep my Duolingo streak alive!

Blog 1 of our EDTech Inquiry Journey

Hello fellow bloggers!

This is Laurence and Natalie! We will be doing our EdTech inquiry project together and can not wait to deepen our learning about technology in the classroom.Ā

Since both of us want to teach at the primary level, we instantly knew we wanted to do our project focusing on the primary grades. Although we did not know what we wanted to do our project on exactly, we felt that this was a great start. Knowing which grade level we wanted to focus on made it easier to choose our final question, which is ā€œhow may we successfully integrate technology in primary grades?ā€ After sharing our question with Rich, he told us that this topic may be too broad. He told us that if need be, we may focus on particular technology for instance types of technological devices, apps/software, and websites that work best for the primary grades. We will have to do some more research to know whether or not this will be necessary.Ā

For our next few blogs, we will be exploring what types of devices and apps are used in primary grades and how they are used, whether that be for math lessons or language arts lessons, etc. Then we plan on discussing what tools we believe would be most successful and eventually which ones we feel we may use. For now, we will be focussing on researching information, to help us support the blogs we have planned in the future.Ā

We look forward to sharing our findings with you!

Learning Chords Am, C and G

Hello fellow bloggers!

For my EDCI 306 class, I will be learning the Ukulele. My goal by the end of this learning journey is to have learned “Riptide” by Vance Joy and “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz.

My first step to learning my first song “Riptide” is to learn the three chords needed which are Am, C, and G. I have absolutely no music background and do not even know what these chords sound like, so I decided to look it up on Youtube. The video is posted at the bottom of this blog post.

I found it very difficult to do the G cord. For the C and Am cord, it is simply one finger. For the G chord, on the other hand, 3 fingers are needed and it is a very awkward position. I had to ensure I had proper posture, my thumb was gripping the back of my Ukulele correctly, and that I was hugging the Ukulele with my right arm. Otherwise, I had no angle to do the G chord correctly. After about 30 minutes of practicing, I finally got the three chords down. I did get frustrated a few times as I could not get the hang of the G chord but after a few times, it started to get easy. Ā I find the Am the easiest to do however, I find that the G chord is the one that sounds the best. I can not wait to put these chords together!

Here is the Youtube video that helped me practice the Am, C, and G chords.

Keeping the streak on Duolingo

Hello fellow bloggers!

This week was my first official week learning Spanish on my chosen software: Duolingo.

This was not my first time using Duolingo. I decided to create a new account so that I could start fresh on my learning journey.

I set my goal time for 10 minutes a day. As soon as I started practicing, I remembered just how much I love this software. Why? Because when you get an answer wrong, at the end of the lesson, they repeat the question you got wrong so that you get another chance to get it right. They allow you to pronounce sentences, match the English word to the Spanish word, write out sentences in Spanish, listen to sentences and write what they’re saying, and SO much more. Duolingo allows you to learn languages in so many different ways. They use pictures, voices, encouragement notes, and so much more to keep you motivated and interested.

The only thing that I do not like about Duolingo is that they give you five lives. If you run out of lives, then you must wait a few hours for your lives to refill. They do this because if you pay for the premium Duolingo, you have unlimited hearts. Ā It just frustrates me that if I fail, I may be punished by not being able to keep practicing. This is something I am going to have together used to. I really enjoy the software and do not want this to get in the way of my learning.

Not everything in life is perfect!

Thanks for tuning in!
